still growing
this is a multimedia piece consisting of a written poem, video, wheel-thrown reduction fired ceramics, and over 123 hospital bands (and counting).
i am both proud and relieved that it is no longer inside me.
i started saving these hospital bands at the age of 14 shortly after i was diagnosed with a rare cancer caused by a gene mutation. after over a decade spent in a deep depression, during which i threw many more of these bracelets away, my practice with clay finally allowed me to realize this piece.
“still growing” is the culmination of many years spent processing and coming to terms with the life change this diagnosis brought.
